iGrid2005: e-VLBI Topology, Plans & Tests

The demo will stream data from radio telescopes at Jodrell Bank (UK), Westerbork (NL), Onsala (SE) and Japan to Haystack (US) for correlation and then display the results on the stand.

This page collects the network diagrams that describe the general topology and configuration details at each site. It also gives the results of the network tests.

Summary of Current Status

UKLight link from Mancheter to Starlight is provisioned at ** VC or about 630 Mbit/s and is connected to the Manchester 7600 and the HOPI switch in Starlight. The MTU is 9000 bytes (Man 7600 mtu is 9216)

The path though HOPI is operational down to Arlington. There is one CCC link from ** to ** the mk5 PC in Haystack.

iperf tests from chin-pc1 (chicago) to gig7 (manchester) show a constant rate of 630 Mbit/s. As expected there are re-tranmitted packets.

udpmon tests from Chicago to Manchester show** .

VLSI kit in Manchester is connected to the routed network and is operatioal on the control plane. The data plane will be connected after the Haystack-Manchester link is complete and characterised.

Network Tests

udpmon Manchester-Chicago

Sent UDP packets from gig7 (manchester) to pc1-chin Thues 15 Sep 23:00 though Fri 16 Sep 08:29 (UK times).
As expected the throughput limits at 632 Mbit/s. Results are here.

iperf tests

First iperf tests by Steve, ChrisT &Tom were a bit unstable but second test by Chris on 14 Sep 05 ran at 600 Mbit/s.

Enjoy, but the usual disclaimers apply!

Feedback and bug-reports are welcome and I will do my best to fix things
