Vacancy for Computer Manager

Due to the departure of John Banks into the higher echelons of British Industry, we have a vacancy in the Particle Physics Group for a Computer Manager.

The group is involved in the OPAL, H1 and Babar experiments and also has a substantial programme of in-house R&D.

The qualifications for this post are a good knowledge of modern computing facilities and methods in Particle Physics. Traditionally this post has been filled by a person with PhD or similar qualifications who has come form a particle physics background. Our group has a cluster of Digital Equipment Workstations (mainly alphas) and also a cluster of Hewlett Packard Unix based HP machines. These are linked to each other by high speed fibre optic fddi and also to superjanet via a connection through the Manchester Computer Centre.

The manager has to ensure that the computing facilities of the group are maintained in best working order. He or she should also contribute in a leading way to the group's policy on upgrades and extensions. A good knowledge of networking is also required.

Depending on the manager's experience and skills, an involvement in one of the group's physics experiments is not excluded.

The post is funded via the group's rolling grant from PPARC and is renewable.

For further information and details of salary, please contact the group leader Prof Robin Marshall; robin@m2.ph.man.ac.uk and tel 0161 275 4170.
